Automated Time-stamp logging with Notepad

We have been using Notepad for decades now.  As we know it is the most basic text editor and lacks many features to beat the leading, feature-rich text editors. Most of us (including me) are already using the faster and more advanced text editors such as Notepad++ which support tab editing and syntax highlighting for over 50  programming, scripting, and markup languages.

But, do you know that even the built-in Windows text editor Notepad has a few useful features which are not known to many?

Let’s unveil the untold secrets about Notepad which are worth knowing.

I. Use Notepad to create a log file

With this trick, each time you open the text file using Notepad, Notepad will automatically append the system date and time at the end of file.

  1. Open Notepad.
  2. Type .LOG on the first line.
  3. Hit Enter.
  4. Save the file.

II. Insert current timestamp

Open Notepad and just hit F5 to insert current system date and time.

I hope this will help you. Share your findings/experience in the comments.

Till then, happy thinking!

I stumbled on the F5 thing years back by mistake, thinking it would maybe refresh the contents of the file, silly me!

The .LOG at the start of the file was pretty neat, thanks for sharing Omkar!!
